Forest Healer Salve combines wildcrafted pine pitch and jewelweed with plantain, usnea, calendula and burdock root in a deeply nourishing herbal salve traditionally used as first aid support for rashes, poison ivy and poison oak exposure, bug bites, scrapes and everyday outdoor irritation. This versatile pine pitch salve belongs in every home apothecary and outdoor first-aid kit.

At the heart of Forest Healer are pine pitch and jewelweed, two distinctive botanicals that make this formula especially useful for outdoor skin care. Jewelweed is prized for soothing hot, itchy and irritated skin, while resin-rich pine pitch provides a protective layer and has long been incorporated into salves for rough, damaged and weather-exposed skin.

Plantain, usnea, calendula and burdock round out the formula, providing additional botanical support for tender, irritated and compromised skin. High oleic sunflower oil, shea butter and local beeswax create a rich, concentrated base that nourishes the skin and helps lock in moisture.

Forest Healer is the salve we reach for after gardening, hiking, camping, bug bites and everyday outdoor adventures – a practical staple for the home apothecary, backpack or first-aid kit.

About the Herbs

Pine Pitch (Pinus spp.): Resin-rich and naturally protective, pine pitch is especially suited for rough, damaged and weather-exposed skin and gives Forest Healer its distinctive woodland character.

Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis): Especially valued for hot, itchy and irritated skin, making it a favorite after bug bites, outdoor exposure and encounters with irritating plants.

Plantain (Plantago spp.): A versatile first-aid herb used to soothe bites, stings, scrapes and everyday skin irritation while supporting the skin's natural repair process.

Usnea (Usnea spp.): A distinctive forest lichen prized in topical herbal preparations for supporting clean, healthy skin.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis): Helps soothe tender, dry and irritated skin while supporting natural skin repair.

Burdock Root (Arctium lappa): Adds nourishing botanical support for dry, reactive and irritated skin.

Why We Chose This Blend

Pine pitch is the heart of Forest Healer — one of the most valued botanicals in folk herbalism for supporting damaged, irritated skin. Its resin-rich sap has been traditionally used for generations to help skin recover from redness, inflammation and everyday wear, forming a protective seal that lets the body's own healing process do its work. Jewelweed and calendula build on that foundation to calm hot, itchy irritation, while plantain and burdock root add traditional support for tissue repair. Usnea rounds out the blend with a final layer of support for clean, healthy skin. Together, these six wildcrafted and organically grown botanicals make Forest Healer one of the most trusted salves in the home apothecary for skin that's taken a beating outdoors.

About High-Oleic Sunflower Oil

We chose high-oleic sunflower oil because it offers many of the same benefits as olive oil while providing superior stability, sustainability and consistency. Made in the USA, high-oleic sunflower oil is naturally rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and has a fatty acid profile similar to olive oil. It is also specifically bred to be low in polyunsaturated fats like linoleic acid, making it more resistant to oxidation and rancidity.

Because it is grown and produced domestically, high-oleic sunflower oil has a lower carbon footprint, more consistent quality and avoids the adulteration concerns that have become increasingly common with imported olive oils. It also has a lighter texture and milder scent, allowing our carefully infused herbs to shine without the strong aroma or heavier feel often associated with olive oil.

The result is a high-quality herbal oil that is stable, sustainable, fast-absorbing and crafted to showcase the plants we work so hard to grow, harvest and infuse.

  • What is a salve?

A salve is a traditional herbal preparation made by infusing herbs into oil and combining the infused oil with beeswax to create a semi-solid balm. Salves are applied directly to the skin and have been used for generations to support skin health and comfort.

  • Should I choose a salve or a tincture?

Salves and tinctures serve different purposes. Salves are applied directly to the skin, making them a great choice when you want targeted topical support for a specific area. Tinctures are taken internally and are typically used when you want to incorporate herbs into your overall wellness routine. Many herbalists keep both on hand, using salves for localized support and tinctures for broader, whole-body use.

  • What's the difference between a salve, balm and lotion?

Salves and balms are oil-based products that contain little to no water, while lotions are water-based and require preservatives. Because they are more concentrated, salves and balms tend to provide longer-lasting moisture and skin protection. Salves have a lower ratio of beeswax compared to balms, which makes them softer and easier to spread.

  • How often do I apply a salve?

Our salves can be applied as often as needed. Frequency will vary depending on the product and your individual needs and goals. Always follow any directions provided on the product label.

  • Do your salves contain synthetic ingredients or preservatives?

No. Our salves are handcrafted in small batches using simple, high-quality ingredients such as herbal-infused oils, beeswax and botanicals. Because they are water-free, they do not require synthetic preservatives.

  • How should I store my salve?

Store your salve in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Natural salves may soften in warm temperatures and become firmer in cooler weather, but this does not affect their quality or effectiveness. Our salves will often last several years when properly stored.
